Renovation of a Semi-Detached House
The existing workers’ house from the 1930s was built with solid clinker brick exterior walls, which were intended to be preserved. During the renovation, the challenge was to maintain the building’s historic charm while adapting it to meet contemporary living standards and, above all, bringing significantly more natural light into the interior through thoughtful design solutions. This was achieved, among other measures, by integrating enclosed dark-painted steel beams as lintels above the existing façade openings, allowing small windows to be transformed into generous, modern-looking glazed fronts, as visible in the illustrated detail. This intervention made it possible to break up the structure of the previously compartmentalized rooms and create a spacious open-plan layout. A comprehensive energy-efficient modernization, including blown-in insulation and triple glazing, was also a major focus of the renovation.
