The six multi-family residential buildings in the Hamburg-Lurup district near Elbgaustraße required refurbishment of the rooftop extensions due to systematic structural defects. The design phase resulted in a comprehensive renovation and modernization of the attic-level building envelopes, which were further specified during the detailed planning stage and included the removal of the exterior wall and roof cladding down to the load-bearing structure. As part of the refurbishment, the roof received an above-rafter insulation system with flat-roof waterproofing, while the exterior walls were fitted with a ventilated curtain wall façade. Minimizing damage to the interior wall finishes and floor coverings, as well as the relocation of nesting boxes, presented particular planning challenges. During the subsequent planning process, the feasibility of funding as a KfW Efficiency House was examined and successfully verified. The construction project presented here also served as the basis for the detailed planning of five additional buildings.
